Automatic Machine Based Assessment System
Assessment is a core component of learning. A fundamental purpose of assessment is to promote learning through feedback. Feedback provides an opportunity for reflection and learning, rather than just to accumulate marks. If the feedback is misunderstood, it may feel like a punishment. MELS introduces ¡°LOAM¡± (Learning Orientated Assessment Machine) to invite children to participate in a series of group activities. It encourages children to learn from peers through participation. All the results are recorded in the system and this assists the teacher in analysing the individual and overall results.

Lastly, MELS provides individualised learning aids (toys and LOAM tokens) so that children can participate in learner-centred activities to enhance deeper understanding. These child-centred activities promote problem solving and give children greater autonomy in their learning.

MELS: Learning materials that foster autonomy in learning (Ages: 3 to 12)

The traditional approach to learning assumes that the right ideas are in the teacher¡¯s head and that children need to be exposed to these to gain understanding. However, children who have always been told what to learn and how to learn it cannot be expected to take over these responsibilities and handle them well.
Learning is not simply a matter of memorisation by rote; it is a constructive process that involves actively seeking meaning from (or even imposing meaning on) events. Learning is seen as the result of a self-initiated interaction with the world.
Young children from a very young age must be taught to be independent in learning (autonomous learner). The autonomous learner takes a proactive role in the learning process, generating ideas and availing himself of learning opportunities, rather than simply reacting to various stimuli of the teacher. To achieve these objectives, MELS provides learning

materials, which are conducive to an autonomous learning environment for children.
Multimedia Learning & Teaching System
The MELS programme provides multimedia teaching resources. These include video clips, animations and a well-designed and instructional subject-based programme for teaching. Children can visualise the same concept or object to appear in different situations and this multiple perspective feature enhances deeper understanding for young learners. The programme also provides topics in
different subjects that are integrated in a theme. In each of these themes there are songs, stories, games, chants andactivities that enhance good memory practice, problemsolving and thinking skills.
Comprehensive Online Home Learning Programme
MELS provides a comprehensive e-learning system that can be used at home for young children. The multimedia learning and teaching system is accessed via the Internet at home. The system also encourages good parenting activities at home and at their convenience.
